The year is 1905.  Little John Williams has just moved from a large city to a small village where his father is the new pastor in the tiny community's new church.  


While living along the banks of a north country river, John Williams meets a boy about his age who lives on the other side of the river...Sprouting Grass is his name.  Sprouting Grass is the youngest of 12 children belonging to Chief Many Moons.  


Sprouting Grass and John Williams become quick friends as they learn about each other's customs and traditions.
