August 8th…
Chocolate Zucchini Bread
“If the summer gave nothing, neither will the autumn.” - Bulgarian Proverb
Is there such a thing as too much candy? Too many toys? Too much fun? Or too much…zucchini? Well, somewhere in the world a group of very inventive and smart people thought there was such a thing as too much zucchini.
These people (or person) came up with a way to get rid of all this zucchini that was plaguing the world! Every year on August 8th, gardeners with extra zucchini from their garden “sneak” a basket of this long, green squash to the porch of their neighbor.
Unlike May Day Baskets, a basket full of zucchini is not always a welcome sight!
If you happen to find a basket full of zucchini on your doorstep some day, there are a lot of ways you can enjoy this healthy goody from the garden. One such way is when it is baked like a bread like in the recipe today.
After you’ve baked chocolate zucchini bread loaf after chocolate zucchini bread loaf and you STILL have extra zucchini left over, toss it into a basket and “sneak” it to the next neighbor in line! Or better yet, share a loaf of bread with someone who could use it!
Chocolate Zucchini Bread
Zucchini. Now that’s a funny name for a vegetable! You may think the name “zucchini” sounds like an exotic animal, a type of hat babies wear, or even an island somewhere off the coast of Italy.
Pronounced zoo-key-nee, it isn’t alone in the world of silly sounding fruits and vegetable names. Listen to these…kumquat, kiwi, lychee, cherimoya, soursop, and bok choy.
What funny fruit and vegetable names can you think of? Better yet, if you were a scientist and discovered a new fruit or vegetable, what would you name it?
